Karate Belts FAQs
I want for my child to take karate lessons. Is
there an age limit?
Most dojos will start to train children in karate when they are as young
as three years old. In fact, many dojos like to be able to train children
at younger ages because it helps make sure that children do not fall
into bad habits from which they must be broken. Typically, most children
will start karate somewhere in the first couple of years after they
starts school because their parents want for them to learn to be assertive
and confident. Despite this, children can start at any age. For that
matter, so can adults. Learning karate takes a mental commitment. Therefore,
as long as a person is willing to commit, he or she can learn karate.
How am I supposed to distinguish between all the different styles of
karate?
Even though there are many different karate styles, most people do not
need to actually know what all of the small differences between these
types of karate are. Learning karate is like learning to cook. When
cooking, the first thing a person needs to learn is how to mix, how
to turn on the oven, how to grill, etc. Later, once these basic skills
are understood, a cook can start to focus on one type of food, ie. Italian,
Chinese, Mexican, etc.
The same is true of martial artists. Somebody studying karate must first
learn to block, kick and punch. Later, after he has learned the essentials,
he can start to focus on a specific type of karate.
Is there any gear needed for karate?
This depends on what kind of karate is being practiced. For example,
if a person is simply working on punching, blocking, and kicking techniques,
there really isn’t any extra equipment needed. However, if a person
is sparring with another, it is important that a person is able to protect
himself or herself. Therefore, it is important that those sparring have
shin guards, helmets and mouth guards.
